The Book of Psalms is an inspired part of God's Word (the Bible), meant to help us think and feel correctly. God inspired many authors, over hundreds of years, to right poetic songs for God's people to learn by and sing with in order to grow closer to Him. King David, a "man after God's own heart" who nearly half of them, those Asaph and the Sons of Korah made substantial contributions as well.
The Psalms are divided into five "books" or areas. Each of these Books ends with a doxology and has certain defining characteristics. Psalm 1 and 2 serve as introductions to the entire Psalter, identifying all the major themes and goals of the diverse songs. They are set off by the inclusio of Psalm 1:1, "Blessed is the man" and Psalm 2:12, "Blessed are all those".
Psalms is the nineteenth book of the Bible. There are 2461 verses minus the titles. Psalm 119 is the largest chapter in the Bible (based on number of verses) with 176 verses. Psalm 117 is the shortest chapter in the Bible (based on number of verses) with two verses. The Latin version of the Psalms (in the Vulgate) was made by Jerome from the Septuagint, not the Hebrew.
