Genesis is the first book of the Bible. The first part of the Bible is a special section named the Book of the Law. In some ways, the boundaries many Bible books are arbitrary, having been determined by the length of a scroll, and not by section markers. Because of this, Genesis contains the first five-sevenths of the Historical Prologue, the lead into the Treaty at Sinai. Traditionally, the Book of the Law has been called the Torah, the Pentateuch, or the Five Books of Moses.
The name 'Genesis' comes from the Greek word Γενεσις meaning 'creation' or 'source'. The Hebrew name for the book is the first phrase/word bÉrÄshith meaning 'in the beginning'. This book opens the Bible and encompasses the Universe's history from the creation of the world to the sojourn of the people of Israel in Egypt.
