Cornelius Van Til was born on May 3, 1895 in Grootegast, Holland. He was the sixth son of Ite and Klazina Van Til, dairy farmers. When he was ten, they packed up and moved to Highland, Indiana. In 1914 he attended Calvin Preparatory School in Grand Rapids, followed by Calvin College and Calvin Theological Seminary. After his first year, Van Til transferred to Princeton Theological Seminary. He went on to Princeton University as a graduate student of Philosophy. In 1925 he obtained a Th.M. at the seminary and the following September he married Rena Klooster. In 1927 he completed his Ph.D.
